New study finds that pollution kills more than 50,000 Britons each year

Here at CFP, we have long championed the benefits of indoor air quality (IAQ) and have partnered with some of the largest companies across the UK to help improve the health and wellbeing of their staff and customers. This week, a new study published in The Lancet caught our attention as it highlighted that 8.3% (50,235) of all UK deaths in 2015 were caused directly by pollution; a truly shocking figure.

The study noted that this figure is equivalent to approximately 78.68 per every 100,000 deaths, with most of these attributed to non-communicable diseases caused by pollution, such as heart disease, stroke and lung cancer.

When compared to the rest of the world, the figures are even more concerning as in terms of workplace pollution, the UK appears in the top ten globally.

The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health is a two-year project that has involved more than 40 international health and environmental authors. It used data from the Global Burden of Disease study to bring together comprehensive estimates on the effects of pollution on health, provide economic costs, and reveal the extent of contaminated sites across the world for the first time.

CFP believes everyone has the right to clean air, and we have published our own guide for Facilities Managers which addresses the real cost of poor IAQ, how to achieve good IAQ and the benefits of a professional air filter management service.

Air pollution as a whole will take time to eradicate and will require the introduction of strict anti-pollution laws and regulations. However, there are small steps we can take to improve the quality of the air around us, particularly in our work environments.

If you are concerned about your IAQ, contact CFP directly on 0161 406 5050 or email us and one of our friendly team will be in touch to discuss how we can help you to achieve better, cleaner indoor air.
