Did you know indoor air is three and a half times more polluted than the air outdoors? While we return to our work sites and readjust from the impact of Covid-19, clean indoor air is more than ever vitally important.
For most companies, the value of clean indoor air is now a top priority. In fact, healthy ventilation and clean air is so important for reducing the risk of Covid that maintaining indoor air quality (IAQ) has been inserted into official ‘Back to Work’ safety guidelines. The UK’s Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) recently published advice encouraging companies to check ventilation levels, identify poorly ventilated spaces and upgrade air filtration systems. Such measures work to “ensure there is adequate ventilation and fresh air for indoor spaces… by using, for example, a CO2 monitor and taking steps to improve fresh air flow in these areas.”
Meanwhile, on September 15th 2021, the UK Government updated its ‘Return to Work Safely’ policy, advocating the importance of clean indoor air in a national drive to dilute the airborne virus. They advise employers to “… use ventilation to mitigate the risk of aerosol spread of Covid-19 in enclosed spaces”, adding that “in poorly ventilated spaces, residual virus can remain in the air after an infected person has left and increase the risk of Covid-19 spreading.”
Companies need to reassure returning employees that their IAQ is being kept in check and that their shared spaces are inherently safe. CFP offer a professional filter management solution, designed to help businesses improve their IAQ in all workspaces.
The first step in safeguarding IAQ and protecting your businesses/buildings from becoming ‘toxic boxes’ is monitoring how your air filters are performing. Maximised Air Movement
Maximising the efficiency of your air handling units (AHUs) is key to maintaining a healthy movement of air. Polluted air passes through the unit and is trapped by the filter. Additionally, UV lighting technology can also be utilised within AHU systems to kill viruses, bacteria or mold spores by exposing them to ultraviolet light.
In summary an AHUs efficiency depends on being well maintained and covered by a service plan that includes filter replacement at the correct intervals thus ensuring the required level of both air flow and IAQ is achieved at all times.
Properly maintained AHUs with correctly specified filters will successfully reduce airborne transmission. But we shouldn’t forget that there are several simple things that can be done to improve IAQ:
- Configuring AHUs to bring in as much fresh air as possible
- Keeping doors and windows open when practical to do so
- Maintaining social distancing in a well-planned and properly spaced working environment
